Because the way we dress at the beginning of summer speaks more of the gym than of vacation.
The body that returns uncovered in May has ceased, for at least a decade, to be the body of liberation. That code—weight loss perceived as emancipation, the light dress as a political gesture—belonged to a twentieth-century era that no longer spoke to us. Today, the body of early summer has taken on a completely different function: it is the public delivery of work carried out throughout the winter. The lightened dress reveals what was done elsewhere, in the gym, at the table, in the months when the body was hidden by loose-fitting garments.
It's clear to see what the summer wardrobe has become in recent years. The return of the tight tank top, dressing in short layers, cropped cargo pants... The body that wears those proportions speaks to the culture of wellness, athletic training, and personalized nutrition programs, which have transformed seasonal undressing into a statement of account.
This is the interesting twist: the uncovered body is less erotic today than it ever was, but rather more informative. It communicates habits. It's read like a resume. In urban summer settings—aperitivo in Milan in June, the port of Forte dei Marmi, the terraces of Rome—the recognizable body is one that's held, controlled, and shaped.
Another, rarely mentioned, element matters: the contemporary summer wardrobe has ceased to be a vacation wardrobe. It's a wardrobe of summer cities, of equipped second homes, of work that continues elsewhere. Summer has ceased to function as a suspension and has begun to function as a relocation, and the clothes that accompany it must withstand video meetings, formal dinners, and travel. What bears the mark of the season—the line, the lightweight fabric, the sandal—is just one layer of a system in which the body remains perpetually exposed to the professional and social gaze.
