Why more and more people play sports in the evening

18 August 2026

Padel, beach volleyball, running, and playgrounds aren't just filling summer evenings. They're changing the way cities build relationships.

For a long time, evening was the time for aperitifs, dinner, and movies. Sports belonged to a different part of the day: early morning, afternoon, or at most late afternoon. Today, all it takes is walking along a promenade or an urban park in August to notice that something has changed. When the sun goes down, the courts fill up.

The most obvious explanation is also the least interesting. Sure, it's cooler in the evenings. But if it were just a question of temperature, we wouldn't be witnessing the constant growth of sports like padel, beach volleyball, or evening running. Sport has taken on a different function at night. Training is no longer just a personal goal. It has become a way to meet.

Padel courts are perhaps the most obvious example. Games start when the workday is over, they're booked with friends, and they end with a beer or an impromptu dinner. The game is important, but often it's not the real reason we get together. It's the excuse that makes that meeting possible.

The same thing happens on the beaches, where beach volleyball continues to be played long after sunset, or in cities crisscrossed by groups of runners who meet in the evening. Even basketball playgrounds fill up again when the temperatures drop and the air becomes lighter. Sport ceases to occupy a space separate from social life and ends up coinciding with it.

It's a difference that also tells us something about our times. In recent years, social life has become fragmented. We work different hours, we travel constantly, we organize meetings weeks in advance. Sport offers a simpler form of connection. It doesn't require a celebration, a party, or a special occasion. All it takes is booking a court.

Evening sport, then, tells us something that goes beyond summer. It's not just a way to avoid the heat. It's a sign that some habits are changing. Where once we met at the bar, today we increasingly meet on the court, with a racket in hand, a ball, or a pair of running shoes.

Perhaps the real change isn't that we play sports at night. It's that we've started using it as a social language. And this will likely continue even after summer is over.
